Rule 23 – Power-driven Vessels Underway

  1. (a)A power-driven vessel underway shall exhibit a masthead light forward; a second masthead light abaft of and higher than the forward one, though a vessel of less than 50 metres is not obliged to but may; sidelights; and a sternlight.
  2. (b)An air-cushion vessel in the non-displacement mode shall in addition exhibit an all-round flashing yellow light.
  3. (c)A WIG craft, only when taking off, landing and in flight near the surface, shall in addition exhibit a high-intensity all-round flashing red light.
  4. (d)A power-driven vessel of less than 12 metres may instead exhibit an all-round white light and sidelights; one of less than 7 metres whose maximum speed does not exceed 7 knots may exhibit an all-round white light and shall if practicable also exhibit sidelights.
