Rule 22 – Visibility of Lights

Lights shall have an intensity sufficient to be visible at the following minimum ranges:

  1. (a)in vessels of 50 metres or more in length — masthead light 6 miles; sidelights 3 miles; sternlight 3 miles; towing light 3 miles; all-round light 3 miles.
  2. (b)in vessels of 12 metres or more but less than 50 metres — masthead light 5 miles (3 miles if length is under 20 metres); sidelights 2 miles; sternlight 2 miles; towing light 2 miles; all-round light 2 miles.
  3. (c)in vessels of less than 12 metres — masthead light 2 miles; sidelights 1 mile; sternlight 2 miles; towing light 2 miles; all-round light 2 miles.
